Marakeen's Promise

this one could go anywhere...

Serilla laughed as firelight flickered cheerily against the canvas wall. "He sure is a fiesty little one, isn't he?" she said as she held the baby securely to her bosom. He was thrashing and trying to twist around, turning his head away from his mother. He wailed loudly as he did so.

"I think I know what the problem is all right," said Coval, chuckling. "Let me see him."

"I didn't know you had any experience with children, my friend," said Ravik, "But let's see how you get on with this son of mine."

Serilla handed Coval the baby and wryly said, "Here you go." Coval took the baby and, instead of cradling it against his chest, he sat it up in his lap so it faced outward. Immediately it became silent and sat complacently, turning its head and looking all around the tent. Coval looked up at Ravik and Serilla with an "I told you so" expression on his face. "I suspect he just wanted to look around a little bit."

"Well I'll be spell-bound," exclaimed Ravik.

Before anything else could be said, the door flap of the tent was thrown aside, and a short, trim, middle-aged man burst into the room.

"M'lord, m'lord!" he exclaimed, "Come quickly! There is something you should see."

Although this was not a time of war and he couldn't imagine what could so urgently require his attention, Ravik quickly rose and strode out of the large tent. Something in the man's tone moved him, and he tried to remember the last time he'd seen his retainer so excited over something.
