Sojourn in the Middle East

Part 8 of 9

This is a blog of some of my impressions during a seven-month period living and working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (the "KSA") in 2007-08.

Red Sea

The Red Sea. Fabled site of Moses' crossing. And modern day land of underwater wonders. Jacques Cousteau visited the Red Sea many times starting in the 1960's. It was there he built his famous village 30 feet underwater, including "Starfish" base, a "garage" for the diving saucer, and a deep station at 75 feet. A team of five "oceanauts" lived there for a month doing periodic dives.

It is a beautiful place, often forgotten among the "children that can't get along" turmoil of the modern Middle East. The water is blue from above, and clear when beneath. And in stark contrast to the deserts that surround it on all sides, it teems with life.
